    1. Good job answering the question about whether you like this movie or not and backing up your opinion with a good explanation. Now, for full points, please also answer one of the other questions.

  2. The characteristics that were typical Bollywood things were the random music numbers and the mix of genres. It was also based on life in India so that is a big Bollywood characteristic. After seeing this I would like to see more Bollywood films, I really enjoyed the change in genres and really who can say no to a good musical number?

I feel that at times it showed women as objects, and as a woman that bothered me. Like when Shanti was thrown to the ground by her husband. At other times though it showed strong independent women. Like when her ghost took her revenge. So over all I felt like it kind of showed both women being disrespected and being respected. Which bothered me, I wish they wouldn't have been disrespected at all but that's okay. I still enjoyed the movie. (:

    1. Good work fulfilling the entire assignment by answering two of the questions: the one about the typical qualities of Bollywood represented in this film and the one about sexism.

I am on the same page with you about the sexism stuff. I enjoy the movie in spite of it but feel a little bit guilty enjoying it. Some of the dance sequences that depicted women as purely sex symbols and then shoved that point down my throat by showing men looking at them or acting toward them as sex symbols especially bothered me. In at least one of these scenes, the first dance number after the reincarnation, they used this to show that Om is a jerk so that made it a little better except that it is obvious that the filmmakers want the audience to enjoy looking at these women as sex symbols. So, they are trying to bake their cake and eat it too. I don't know how I feel about that.

  3. I enjoyed this movie, even though there are some parts of the film that were just totally out there I cant recall the scenes but surely most of you can feel that way too. But it worked in a way that it intensify the movie. This movie probably has to have one of my favorite death scenes, I don't know why but the sequence from Shanti and Mike on the set to Om flying out the window and dying at the hospital just stuck with me.

I'm kinda at odd ends with the sex symbols used in this film. Mainly because throughout history the Hindu culture has always believed showing off the body and I wont lie are known as the sex culture. But I'm not 100% sure of my facts so don't take my word for it. I definitely saw though too much sex symbols, such as when Om grows up and his assistants follow him. But when is it too much? If we were from the 70's in Bollywood maybe what they wore in that sequence would of been too much.

  4. Bollywood characteristics i noticed was the mixing of genres which i think is interesting because you get to experience different types of emotions throughout the movie. Other characteristics would be the randomness of dancing music numbers. I wouldn't mind at all seeing more Bollywood movies, and so i want to see more. They create this feeling that interests me in some way. Maybe it's because just watching films from around the world which i think gives off a whole different view instead of watching movies just constricted in one country.

In my view of this film, i really enjoyed watching it. It had some parts where things were very dramatic and other times they were just plain silly and funny. Which i think is a good thing films can do, making the audience feel different types of emotions throughout the entire movie.

  5. I actually haven't seen a major Bollywood movie before this one. From YouTube clips and just general rumor-like knowledge, I've always assumed most if not all Bollywood films are cheaper knock-offs and not worth my time. Om Shanti Om really changed that view for me. It's high-budget set design and excellent writing, including awesome contrast payoff, extremely well done death scenes, humor, characters, and even dance scenes that immerse yourself in the film completely. I love it. I would even go so far as to say it would rank in my top 20 international films. But, on to the questions, even though I'm guessing I kind of answered the second one already.
I noticed a lot of awesome characteristics that I didn't really notice about Bollywood before watching this movie. Every single one of them reminded me of live action Disney movies made back in the '70s. One of them was the amount of musical scenes, which I'm sure a lot of people find ridiculous, but I like it. Another characteristic was the color and setting. Half of the movie takes place in the seventies, and most of the movie itself uses really bright colors like yellow, red, pink, and green. Josh told me another awesome thing I picked up on that I really enjoyed, even though it might actually not have anything to do with the film itself but the actual language, was that a surprising amount of the dialogue was English. I thought that was awesome and it made some of the lines a lot darker or lighter, depending on what was being said.
The only other question I feel like I could answer is the last one. Now, I know in America, sexism is really bad, we all know it, we all disprove of it, and I can definitely see why someone could have an issue with this film or Bollywood in general. There are a lot of times in the film (Specifically the music numbers) where women are almost flaunted and looked at objectively, but personally I don't have an issue with it at all, but I'll get to that in a second. Now, the women characters themselves aren't objectified, in fact they're mostly portrayed very accurately and respectively. Now, I'm not going to act like I'm an India-expert, but I don't find an issue with how women are seen in the movie. This might not be true but it seems that the "flaunting" is pretty natural in the culture, and it looks like the actors don't mind (Although I will admit that IS their job), and besides, the director/choreographer was a woman.
But, personal opinions aside, I really loved this movie. The writing wasn't extremely well done, but I liked it. I enjoyed the characters, the dance numbers, and the humor a lot. It even has what I consider to be an absolutely amazingly well done death scene. I loved this movie and the experience of watching it, and I would even consider owning it on Blu-Ray. That good.
