Valentín (2002)

I find it interesting that the poster to the right bears the tagline "Cupid Just Turned Eight". It is evident that the filmmakers intended for Valentín to be a matchmaker character (his name means "Valentine" as in St. Valentine's Day) but I am not completely sure if I am confident that the matchmaker element of the story is really the center and heart of this film. I am curious to know what all of you think. Please answer two of the questions below:

  • Do you feel the tagline "Cupid Just Turned Eight" really describes the film's plot well? Why or why not?
  • If you had to pick a genre for this film, what would it be? Is it a mixture of genres?
  • What did you like most and/or least about this film? Please explain in detail.
  • What do you think the theme of this film is? Please justify your theme statement with at least three examples from the film.
  • What observations did you make about Argentina while watching this film? What questions about Argentina did the film raise for you?
And, as always, extra credit to anyone who does research to answer the questions the film raised for them if they post the answers here.

NOTE: This film is on Netflix instant view.

  1. I will make a short notice to say that this movie was pretty good, but to me not as good as the other movies we have seen in the class. Also since I am cut on time, I need to make this post a lot shorter than I would like it to be.
I think the tagline "Cupid just turned eight" isn't very connected to the movie. Sure, Valentin does some matchmaking and has some romantic aspects, but I think the movie is a lot more focused on growing up, and some of the aspects, losses, and gains of doing so. Very interesting stuff.
Last question I am able to answer, what is the genre? I would honestly say drama. I mean, there are laughs, and romantic qualities about it, I think the movie is mostly and foremost a drama about growing up, simple as that, though in my opinion it pulls that off very well.
And to be honest, I still think the kid was kind of a brat.

  2. for genres i think it would be a romantic comedy. i loved this film it was very put together for me and the naration was amazing. that little boy was my favorite him telling the sorry is what i loved about it. i did not like it when the grandma past away tho it made me wanna cry but otherwise it had a happy ending

  3. I don't think that tagline works for this movie. The only time that that would work would be at the end. It would work if the movie was more based about the boy hooking up his piano teacher and his dads ex. But that bit is only at the end and wasn't super important, it was kind of just a nice touch to show the kid's point about how there are good things and bad things that happened. Anyway no that tagline didn't work for me.
The computer messed up so i lost my first post so now we only have a minute left so i will make a second post answering another question later (:

  4. The cupid just turned eight tagline to me doesn't fit the film plot. Although Valentine did had some times where he was trying to find love and all of that but to me that isn't the case. For me i felt like it was about Valentine just going through his life and moving on. Like for example he would always be around his grandmother and being used to not having dad being around all the time. Around the time where his grandmother past away he had to figure out what to do next to move on with his life. Also dealing with his dad going through relationships with other women and wondering who is going to be his next mother.

What i think the genre of this movie would be mostly a drama type. I don't want to say a comedy or romantic drama type of movie because to me it really wasn't really a romantic type of film. It did had some moments where romance was included and also comedy involved but to me the whole movie was a dramatic type of film. Just the beginning for example already gave off a drama type of mood. Valentine wanted to be an astronaut but his grandmother thought that it wasn't really a possibility or choice.

  5. Oh damn, I've been trying to put off this post and Umbrella of Cherburg for the longest time. This movie and Umbrella too made me feel like that they purposely make you hate the characters. Personally I didn't like any of the characters, they were all deceiving themselves and brought more issues than solutions to the table.

The tagline was totally pointless to the film until the last few minutes of the film. And by the time people were realizing Valentin was match-making, they had already forgotten about the poster.

What I've learned about Argentina is that the people there are really devoted to blood-related family, you take care of your family no matter what! Everybody even strangers can walk up to you and start talking to you, even kiss you (on the cheeks) and nobody will find that odd. In the US you do that expect a police cruiser to come pick you up in 3 minutes.

I feel that this film falls into three genres but the film doesn't necessarily have the aspects of the typical genres. They were; Realism, Dramance (Dramatic Romance) and Dry Humor.
