RUSSIA!!!

This week we had the privilege of watching four fine pieces of Russian cinema.

Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures!  Here you go.  Some of Russia's most famous and beloved comedy.

Answer the all the following:

  • FIRST:  What movie at home will you be watching from your country?
  • SECOND:  When is your interview scheduled to happen?

And, answer these, too:

  • Did you like Shurik?  Why or why not?
  • What were some of the Russianistic things you noticed that differed from what we commonly see in American Comedy?

Then, we watched the Academy Award Nominated Russian drama: 12.  A Russian remake of the American classic from the '50s, 12 Angry Men.
  • Did you like 12?  Why or why not?
  • It was nominated for Best Foreign Film by our Academy Awards.  Why do you think it was nominated?  Do you agree, personally, it should've been nominated?  Why or why not?

Then, we watched the most interesting silent film classic, Man with a Movie Camera.
  • This is considered an experimental film and a documentary.  One that is visually poetic.  Did you like it?  Why or why not?
  • What kind of experience was it "stepping" back in time, so to speak, and seeing Russia in the 1920s?

And, finally, we watched Russian Ark.  This a film like no other.  It was my first experience seeing it, and it was definitely an experience.  Poetic, quite often eery, and a first of it's kind.
  • What did ya'll think - did you like it?  Why or why not?
  • Would you recommend this movie to someone else?

  • Which movie this week was your favorite, and why?

THANKS CLASS.  AND DON'T FORGET:  BRING YOUR MAD MAX PERMISSION FORM!!!!

They have to come Monday!  Monday!  Monday!

Okay, have a good weekend.

Yay!  Russia!!!

  1. I actually didn't super enjoy Shurik. I understand the value and the humor but there's something about it that bothered me and I can't seem to place my finger on it. It relied a lot on physical humor which I appreciated but I couldn't get myself to believe any of it was happening. That may have been what took me out of it. Is the inability to believe the movie. 6/10

Did you like 12? Why or why not? I really liked 12. I enjoy the change it brought to the classic film rather than being a straight up remake ala Psycho (1998). I didn't really like how after the case was solved they all decided to band together to save the kid. It felt too forced and out of character almost. Again, I appreciate the change from the original story but I don't think they needed to get together to solve the case and save the kid after that. I mean, I don't know how just by talking about it you can solve a murder and figure out who did it. It doesn't feel real. But, I don't know. I may have missed something. Plus, the bird thing was a little much.
However, it definitely deserved the nomination. The entire movie was great. Especially the acting, writing, and cinematography. That was phenomenal. I appreciate how they made the cinematography different with each story line. The overexposure and editing of said footage was mesmerizing. 7/10

C'mon, Will. I freaking LOVE Man with a Movie Camera. The film blew me away when I first watched it. The music added to all of the suspense and emotion I was feeling as I watched it. I'm still blown away by the editing. I don't know how they did a lot of that back then. And the director was a genius with hiding the anti-government symbolism. He showed us all of these people going about their daily lives (people getting married/divorced. Children being born and people dying). He showed us the rich and the poor, the young and old, everyone. And he used the role of the cameraman to show how the government doesn't help them, they just watch. And while the rich get drunk in Communist bars the poor are struggling to go through life. He is a genius and this may actually be my favorite film of all time. Scratch that. It is my favorite film of all time. Psycho is now number 2 again. 11/10. (this thing goes all the way up to 11.) This movie heavily inspired Uyadina and Valentine's Weekend BT-Dubs.

I, personally, have only seen about 30 minutes of this film but from what I saw, while definitely a technical feat, it was really slow and hard to watch. I didn't really enjoy it. For now, 5/10. But then again, I haven't finished it. I'll do that eventually. First I need to sit through Raiders without falling asleep, which I feel like I can do. I haven't tried in about a year and a half. Probably way longer. Like, 3 years. When did we last watch Raiders in class, Will? That's the last time I watched it. Anyway, yeah. The end.

    1. In 12 i get why you felt it was forced but to me the fact that they band together gave the movie more depth. Because they all changed there vote and with that they all kinda changed themselves. So to me it didn't fell like out of character as much as character development. but i do see your point.

    2. Sherik was good but I agree with you. I wasn't able to relate to it. And most movies have a lot of personal experience if you've noticed. but, this movie was probably based on stupid humor. I don't know but it makes since I mean Sherik likes this girl and they undress in front of eachother because its hot and they don't even notice eachother. but the test part we can all relate too we try and study at the last moment and never get enough time to learn anything and everything you need is unavailable because everyone already has it all. so I can see the moral or the story being last minute things are never really on your side.

  2. -I will be watching Chennai Express for my project on India.
-I have not scheduled my interview yet.

    Shurik:
I really liked Shurik. He really did feel like the Russian Mr. Bean; he was charming, quirky, and overall just fun to watch. Their comedy felt pretty similar to American comedy in a lot of ways, to me at least. The first and third parts were very physical slapstick comedy and the second wast mostly funny because of dramatic irony.
    ----------------------------------------------
    12:
I loved 12. Definitely my favorite of the Russian films. I really liked the setting, and how it told a slew of stories, while keeping the main characters in a crappy school gymnasium. I haven’t seen many foreign films, but I think I still probably would have given this one an award. It was a really beautiful and thought-provoking experience. It had incredibly interesting characters that we get to know pretty personally; and it had great cinematography.
    ----------------------------------------------
Man with a Movie Camera: did not watch
    ----------------------------------------------
    Russian Ark:
Did I watch this movie, or was it just a really weird dream? I’m not sure what it meant, or if it meant anything; but I really enjoyed it. It was something totally unique and I liked that a lot. The review that Will read to us said something along the lines of it being the closest a film can get to the dream state, and I totally agree. I think I would introduce this movie to a few of my friends, but I’m not sure any of them would appreciate it. I get the feeling that I don’t even fully appreciate it; and I love that.

  3. Unfortunately, I have been receiving a lot of complications when it comes to scheduling my interview. As well as the movie, sadly. Things have been crazy lately, and I haven’t had much time to myself.

Now, About Shurik. Shurik was a very unique and hilarious comedy. I was mesmerized by it’s style, and loved every second of it. I found it interesting how different it was, such as the fast paced concepts so confusing that not even the characters understand, a sudden change to romance, etc. I loved it all.

The thing about 12 is that it started incredibly slow. It took all my might to not to fall asleep, and just when I was starting to, a sudden incredibly loud scene. It was startling and I did not like it. I feel like a loud war zone shouldn’t have been put into a movie like that. However, the movie started to become very interesting after that point. So to answer your questions, I only liked the last half of the movie, and I believe that same emotional rollercoaster is why it was nominated for an award.

A Man With a Camera was an incredibly strange movie, but unfortunately, I couldn’t enjoy it. I am not a fan of experimental films, and this one made no sense and bored me the whole time. So I’m sorry, I did not like this film. The experience was very unethical, and I couldn’t follow it. So confusing.

Russian Ark was an incredibly unique film, and did it’s job well of documenting famous artwork, while also keeping an interesting story. I very much enjoyed watching this first of it’s kind film. I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in Russian history or artwork. I feel like it explains those incredibly well.

    1. "... did it’s job well of documenting famous artwork, while also keeping an interesting story."

I'm not quite sure that was the point of the movie. To me, the movie had very little to do with the documentation of the art; it was more about the characters and why they were there. I thought it was much more about human interactions than the art in the museum. However, that's just my opinion, not necessarily what the director intended.

    2. I disagree with your point about 12.
Juries aren't quiet conversations. They get heated, emotional, and just plain crazy in some instances. I'm not sure what scene you're referring to that scared you, but I am sure that it was well constructed for a very good reason. Nothing in this film felt out of place to me.

  4. I don’t know what movie ill be watching yet but ill find it tonight.
i haven't scheduled my interview yet but i do have someone to interview.

Shurik. I like shurik i find it funny and just super awesome. the most different thing i sew thats different from American comedy, is the long moving shots. I like that a lot but i just love the comedy that the Russian people have, and just the Russian coulter in general.

12 was awesome. I haven’t seen 12 angry men but i feel that the Russian remake was better. I can’t know for suer intel i watch both. but that movie was just so good. I like how into the movie you get and it keeps you into it. just wondering is he guilty, is he not guilty are they going to vote guilty or not guilty. And there is so much stuff going on even though its pretty much all in one room. I think it was nominated because its pretty much a masterpiece.

Man with a movie camera kinda blow my mind. The fact that they could do all that stuff with editing back then. it is totally both a experimental film and a documentary, seeing how life was back then in Russia. it was cool to go back and see what it was like, it was interesting to see that the cars kinda just drove around the people back then.

Russian ark….WOW… This movie was so grate it was the most original movie i have ever seen. At parts it almost felt like i was playing a video game, because of the framing is a lot like cut sense in games. I felt like the hole thing happened right then and there this movie is a masterpiece hands down.

  5. I am watching Romantics Anonymous for my movie.
My interview is being done over email and should be completed by next Friday.

Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures!
Did you like Shurik? Why or why not?
I personally didn’t like Shurik very much. While I can see the humor, I didn't really find it that amusing. I tend to enjoy more verbal humor and things that require a bit more thought. Shurik is the kind of thing I would watch on a really off day when I was wanting to watch something a bit easier to just watch rather than understand. I do appreciate how the movie has a lot of humor that follows the plot though. The movie itself seems to be humor for the sake of humor, and that is my only problem with it. It has a steady plot, and I suppose it is rather funny in a way, but I prefer comedy that has a point, something that ties it into reality so I gained more than amusement from it.
What were some of the Russianistic things you noticed that differed from what we commonly see in American Comedy?
The humor was very visual. In America, we get used to fast responses and situational irony to provide our humor. The last one also showed a lot about the Russian punishment system that isn’t something we are used to here. The days of mandatory work seemed similar to community services hours, though the timeline was more rigid and people do full days worth of work instead of over a period of time when they can work it out.

    12
Did you like 12? Why or why not?
I really enjoyed it. I felt the way the scenes were cut together provided a good amount of backstory as it became relevant. At points, it kind of felt like they were dragging on, though I feel that has a lot to do with how we had to split the movie up. For the most part, the movie stayed at a natural pace. I feel like some of the background of the jurors wasn’t completely relevant, but it made for a more interesting movie. Instead of a room full of angry men with differing opinions, they all had a valid reason to vote the way they did. I enjoyed being able to see the way differnt things are viewed in Russian society. The movie brought attention to how Russians view themselves as a sort of supreme group of people. I felt that 12 also forced the audience to think about themselves also. It comments on flaws in the legal system and in human perception. Almost everyone was convinced that it was a cut-and-dry murder case, but the defendant wasn’t guilty. It made me wonder if I would have taken the time to honestly pay attention and absorb the information properly before making a decision. Everyone seemed so wrapped up in their own life. They were so focused on getting to their meetings, or catching their flights before they even took the time to consider the evidence. The movie requires a lot of attention to fully wrap your head around, and I feel life does as well.
It was nominated for Best Foreign Film by our Academy Awards. Why do you think it was nominated? Do you agree, personally, it should've been nominated? Why or why not?
I strongly agree that 12 should have been nominated. The movie explores the human experience in a way that isn’t often done. While it is a remake of an American movie, it was done in a very different style with a different pacing. The movie took the story of Twelve Angry Men as a skeleton and turned it into something very unique, and very European.

  6. Man with a Movie Camera
This is considered an experimental film and a documentary. One that is visually poetic. Did you like it? Why or why not?
I did. At first, I wasn’t sure I was going to. While I do like experimental films, I tend to watch ones that are more eerie and honestly, horrifying. I wasn’t sure a piece that was a historical documentary would work for me, but it was really interesting.
What kind of experience was it "stepping" back in time, so to speak, and seeing Russia in the 1920s?
I had seen a lot of American culture from the same time period, so it was interesting to see some of the difference between Russia and America at the time. I also really liked that there was something inherently human about the movie. While the clips were short and there wasn’t exactly a solid plot, I still felt. I experienced the world through a different lens than I am used to, but the emotion was the same. It was a world I have never lived in, but one that was easy to understand because it incorporated so many aspects that have become staples in western living and the human experience.

    Russian Ark
What did ya'll think - did you like it? Why or why not?
I liked it from an artistic standpoint, but not as a consumer of art. It isn’t a movie I would pick on my own, nor is it one that I am likely to watch again. However, it was a remarkable feat. There was a lot happening, and at times it was rather hard for me to believe it was essentially being filmed in real time when I watched the change in the scenery and all of the extravagant dress that was used throughout the film.
Would you recommend this movie to someone else?
It depends. To most of my friends? No. To someone who appreciates and understands film a bit more? Yes. Russian Ark is a remarkable movie if you take into account how it was done. For a movie with so much happening to be shot in one take is amazing. We essentially travelled through time without the camera cutting once. To get so many people to cooperate and act just as they needed to for an hour and a half without a single camera cut is nearly unheard of.

  7. The movie I will be watching at home from my country, Cambodia, is The Missing Picture and I plan on having my interview on Wednesday the 13th. I liked Shurik, I think it was goofy and an enjoyable thing to watch. Something different about russian comedy is that their humor is sometimes silly and kind of all over the place and random and here I feel like it's more like sarcasm and hidden jokes. I also liked the movie 12. It was a very intense and interesting movie and I think it was nominated for Best Foreign Film because of this. I loved the movie Man with a Movie Camera. It was so interesting because every shot was of what everything really looked like and how things were back then and I've always wondered what it was like in the past (in all parts of the world) so watching that was a cool little experience for me and I enjoyed it very much. I also liked Russian Ark. It was so fascinating to me. That movie sort of pulled me in and I think it was a weird movie but it was really good and I liked it a lot. I would definitely recommend this movie to someone else, and I would hope they enjoyed its weird awesomeness as much as I did.

I have an interview set up for this upcoming Tuesday after school with Natalie Gerber, a teacher from Maeser Prep Academy.

Operation Y and Shurik's other adventures
I did like this movie just to see Russia's take on comedy. I enjoyed how there were different stories with the same character, but personally i didn't like how they put them together as one movie. I would see it being more of a TV show and each adventure is a different episode.
Something more unique I noticed was how they had the montages and sped things up. They also had a lot of funky sound effects that made it fun and seem more cartoon like.

    12
I adored this movie. While going into it with an open mind, I still somewhat expected to struggle with staying involved in the story like I was watching 12 angry men because all of the characters are just in one room talking and arguing but with the Russian remake I found it really easy to stay involved and I loved how they edited in different clips to show bits of the past and piece together more backstory throughout the film.
I think it was nominated because it's a great film. I completely agree with the nomination. It already had some attention because it's a remake of a classic movie, but it also added in things like the scenes from the boy's past and how most of the characters ended up talking about their past, or telling interesting stories that had symbolism the related to the case they were studying.

    Man With a Movie Camera
I did like it to an extent, I thought it was interesting how while it was very experimental there were still consistencies. I might have watched it on my own or enjoyed it more if it was a short film.
I thought it was really interesting to see everything from the perspective of someone is 1920's Russia. It was eye opening to see how everything was in their industrial revolution and to think how probably none of those people are alive anymore. Also, how stunning it would have been to see all of the interesting editing for the time in film making.

    Russian Ark
I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It was really incredible to see an entire movie filmed in one shot and its absolutely crazy to think about how much effort it must have taken. Just that itself earns the movie major respect, at least from me.
I would recommend this film to people, if not for the beautiful aesthetic, then to keep peoples minds more open to different kinds of movies out there and to appreciate them more.

  10. The movie I will be watching for Brazil will be City Of God.
I will be Interviewing my aunt who is from Brazil soon. I don't know when

Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures:
I like his wacky comedic style I thought it was a very creative way to express himself in his films. I think it differs from american comedy because it is a lot more mature while still being immature.

    12:
I was really interested in twelve mostly because of the point brought up by the people in the gym room they started telling stories about themselves in the past and trying to convince each other that a specific teenager is guilty of murder or if he isn't.
I think it was nominated simply because of how good a really was. I bet that if you were to pitch this idea to someone they would think that it would be boring but someone stuck with it and continuously made it interesting.

    Man with a Movie Camera:
I personally understand that it was old and that it was an experimental film but i didn't really get the point of it I din't like it as much as 12 or Shurik but it was still ok.

    Russian Ark:
I really didn't like this movie. again i understand that it was an experiment but I think that this film was very boring and it felt like it was to long and there was no solid story. i was confused about what was going on half the time.
Personally i would not recommend this movie to anyone.

  11. The movie I will be watching for my country, England, is undecided
And I do not have a interview scheduled yet.

    Shurik:
These films were really funny. I feel like the humor was very similar to Charlie Chaplin.
It’s like its one of those things that is true slapstick comedy. I really enjoyed the cartoon-y style of it. Overall, it’s funny material that captures that real comedy that can make you laugh.

    12:
Personally, I haven’t seen 12 Angry Men, so watching the Russian version of it didn’t appeal to me. I did enjoy it, it had a great story line and was interesting, but if given the chance to watch it again, I wouldn’t.

    Man With A Camera:
I really enjoyed this film. I’m not as big of a film buff as most of the students here, so I don’t know much. Seeing old film like this was intriguing. Such as the editing in some of the scenes, I thought that was very artistic. Seeing the life of Russians back in the 1920’s was interesting and I enjoyed it. One thing I didn’t like was the fact it didn’t have a plot. Though I enjoyed the artistic part of it with the multiple shots of different scenes, I can’t sit down for an hour and a half watching shots of different places to classical music. As an artist, I loved it, but I don’t think I’d ever watch it again.

    Russian Ark:
This movie was cool to watch. The continuous shot was interesting, seeing how they kept going and weaving through history was very compelling. Though, I found it hard to stay focused. The unbreaking scenes, yet riveting, were boring. There was no interesting plot twists. As for recommending this to someone else, I don’t think I would unless they asked for a movie in this genre specifically.

  12. I will be watching a film called Cronos. It is a Mexican horror film.
I conducted my interview through email and have the answers written down.

    -- Operation Y and Shurik's other Adventures --
I really liked the segments that we watched from this film. Some great examples of well executed set up/pay off slapstick humor with some hilarious situations and perfect performances to contribute to the laughs.

I noticed that Russian humor often lasts a long time. They spend a lot of time building one joke continuously for a large portion of the runtime. They set it up in a way in which they can really construct a very enjoyable sequence of events that all lead up to a very satisfying pay off with the final punch line. American comedies tend to quickly rush to the punchline in order to keep the audience at attention. This, unfortunately, sacrifices a lot of the slow-burn effects that a lot of jokes not only become more effective with, but also allows the audience to really process why what just happened was funny.

    -- 12 --
I enjoyed this film immensely. Great dialogue delivered by great actors who clearly were comfortable in their characters. The actors really settled nicely into their roles and everything simply flowed so smoothly. Long-winded monologues felt natural and enjoyable to watch, with some very interesting things being said about the misconceptions of the young man being accused for murder.
The film also took the original concept from 12 Angry Men and expanded upon it while also adding onto the preconceived set up. It implemented a lot of new ideas and lessons to be learned from each of the 12 men.
Each man has his own distinct personality that plays off so well with all the others. You have the hard-headed man who wants to see this young boy get his what he deserves. You have the voice of reason who wants what is best for the boy. And watching these two present their arguments and attempt to sway each of the other men is a joy to watch.

I do believe that this film deserved the nomination for Best Foreign Film. Great pacing, great performances, fantastic writing, and a great ending that paid off well.

    -- Man With a Movie Camera --
A fantastic experiment that tested the norms and limitations of filmmaking at the time. A trailblazing piece of history that shows incredibly creative uses of mirrors, tracking shots, and picture in picture editing. A time capsule of individuality in filmmaking that excites and sends emotion through the glorious ridiculousness that the shots and score even further the atmosphere this film creates.

It was a very interesting site to witness as this film shows the effects of communism by showing a large man towering over the bustling city streets as a sort of unknown force of control and fear, while also acting as a silent watchman who observes and notes the behavior of the city’s inhabitants.

    -- Russian Ark --
This one was interesting. I personally liked it, but I’d like to think that I am much more confident in my ability to digest long sequences of nothing really happening. I believe that if you have very strong actors playing well written characters, then you really do not have to have a ton of things happening. Some of the greatest films are strictly dialogue and they are a joy to watch, (i.e., Twelve Angry Men, Glengarry Glen ross, etc.)

I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to see how a film that is cheated to be seamless affects them. Anyone who is open-minded enough to handle something different.
    ---------------------------------------------------

My favorite films out of all of these is a tie between Man With a Movie Camera and 12. They both were really entertaining and they both had great deeper meanings that created more depth and rewatch value.

Yes, shurik is so funny no matter if you get all of the russian humor or not.
Russian comedy is more zany and it's bigger and more physical than american comedy. like we still have that but i feel like russia pulls off that kind of comedy better.

    12.
I thought 12 was so good. it was just really dramatic but it was real. and it made you think more than you would see in a typical american movie would.
I think it was nominated because it just really gets into the characters heads but it did it in a way that makes them so real. i feel like it should have have won. it was such an amazing movie and i feel like more people should see it.
    Man with a Movie Camera.
it was so unique at the time. it was something no one had seen and it’s really cool that it didn’t just disappear, but it inspired others.

i enjoyed shurik, i really like how they use their bodies for the comedy instead of voice it definitely makes it more enjoyable, the way they dressed seemed different then we did at that time but im not sure it definitely seemed different than most american cinema just by the way it looked and felt.

12 was awesome i do want to watch it again because i fell asleep at some parts but the parts that i was awake it was really entertaining and had good drama, it definitely deserved to be nominated for that award ussually i dont enjoy watching films with other languages but this film actually helped me to enjoy them more so i can definitely appreciate that about this film.

this movie was probably based on stupid humor.

I thinkn it was a good film. It gives us detail and a good idea about what jurry duty does behind closed doors, haha. But I completely loved the film it was funny, intemadating and intence! Mybfavorite part was when the guy was messin with the knife. It was cool and its an actual russian hobby they do itnto prove they have more better hand cordnation and mind focus to show intemadation. I thought it was pretty awesome.

I didnt find it amusing, wasnt interested in it at all and historys my favorite subject! In fact I actually fell asleep through the middle. And theres not say on my end.

I thought it was too good to bo one continous shot! But it was awesome how they filmed it that long with no mistakes, I wonder how many times they filmed it before they got the perfect shot?? I mean you cant just say "ok you had a week to practice now go act andndont mess up!!" Carried out with a slap on the butt I mean I bet they filmed it alot I mean I bet someonenmessed up somewhere. "Hey! Jimmys too close to the camera" or "jimmy get away from the salad bar and film and remember to keep your shirt on!!" Haha but certainly amazing it leavesnalot of questions though!

I had a hard time getting into Russia all together. Yes this movie had some alright comedy. Something i also noticed is the use of props, they were used a lot. Unlike American comedy that uses dialogue as puns.

I only saw maybe half of 12 and the small part i saw was boring to me so i cant really say anything means that i didn't see all of it.

    --Man with a Movie Camera--
I found this movie to be one of the most boring things i've ever spent my time on, hate me I don't care. I just found it very boring and uninteresting

    --Russian Ark--
