Mr. Vampire (1995)

What if there were a movie where Hong Kong martial arts masters fought vampires?! And what if the vampires vamped people with their long, spine-like fingernails? And what if they were blind but could see your breath? And what if they hoped everywhere? Like a bunny. Yeah, they should definitely hop like a bunny. That would be awesome. Oh wait! That movie's already been made! It's called Mr. Vampire and it is awesome. So, react to it below. Please answer two of the following questions:

  • What do you like and dislike about the film? Why?
  • What did the film help you understand about Hong Kong cinema and culture?
  • Who would win in a fight: American vampires or Asian vampires? Why?

  1. I LIKED THE MOVIE BECAUSE I LOVE THE ACTION SCENES. THE CAMRA MOVEMENT WAS AMAZING THE SHOTS WERE THE BEST FOER AN OLD FILM.
THE FILM MADE MORE SENSE IN CHINESE BEACUSE IT SHOWED MORE THOUGHT AND MORE OF THE GENRE TYPE. I THINK CHINESE VAPIRES WILL WIN THERE NOT FAST BUT HARD TO KILL AND THEY CANT SEE BUT THY SMELL REALY WELL. AMERICAN VAMP ARE EASY TO KILL AND EASY TO FIND

  2. I actually really liked this film, as I'm sure most of my classmates did. The awesome combination of kung-fu, comedy, horror, and romance is quite amazing. I don't think there is a single thing I really disliked about it, but I will admit the ending was a bit cut-off. It reminded me of some other wacky asian comedy's I've seen, like Drunken Master, and Police Story. The kung-fu was definitely very awesomely differentiated from standard martial arts, I noticed it was more tailored to the vampires and other they were fighting. It's definitely really cool how martial arts changes on the spot like that.
The film really helped me to understand death when it comes to eastern countries culture. It actually seems to be very centered on luck, especially when it comes to the actual burial. The day has to be lucky, the plot has to be lucky, the colors and ceremony have to be lucky, it's very interesting really. The actual vampires were pretty spectacular too! Seeing the awesome differences from theirs to ours was really interesting to see, like the jumping, the fingernails, the different cures and remedies, it was an awesome insight into Asian horror-culture.
All in all I really liked this movie, and definitely had an awesome reaction.

    1. It really was refreshing to watch a movie that had breaks in genres to experience how far a movie can go in possibilities it could make. If that makes any sense.

The ending was so cut-off that when I had to watch it at home on youtube, I thought the man who uploaded it edited it himself. So I spent 20 minutes looking for the full ending. I enjoyed that this movie is remembered as a vampire flick that there were also ghost who played a role in the movie as well, like a good side story.

  3. What i liked about this film was that it wasn't really just one genre. It was a blend of a couple of them and i felt like that kept my attention a little better than it would have other wise. I also liked how the portrayed the vampires. It was very different than what we are used to. Well it's been a while since we have seen it but from what i remember there wasn't much i didn't like.
In a fight i feel like a modern american vampire would win because we portray them as very powerful and not much effects them; where the Hong Kong vampire is very limited as to what it can and can not do.

    1. What if we added a Transylvania vampire to the equation? We would have a Mexican standoff of the three. Just a side thought.

  5. Now I can I see why Josh loves the Chinese Vampires genre so much. It's funny how Josh said that Hong Kong cinema adds about a million other genres to the movie, because growing up when I would watch old Kung-Fu, Martial Arts, Hong Kong experience I would feel that there was more to the story then what is stated. How the characters would go from a random comedic moment to an instant love interest. I also learned that Cinema in Hong Kong was once the 3rd largest in filmmaking behind Hollywood and Bollywood.
A question I wonder is, does the vampire eventually gain his vision? For a whole there he can only smell but near the end, doesnt look like he's uses his nose much.

A fun fact is that the man who played the vampire in the movie was actor Wah Yuen who was also the Male Landlord in Kung Fu Hustle.

    1. Yeah when i was growing up i would always watch Kung-Fu Martial Arts movies and at the time i didn't notice how many genres Chinese cinema adds on to the movies because it all felt natural as a whole as a kid. Anyways i'm pretty sure the vampire doesn't gain any vision. I believe it was just apart of the acting.

  7. I really enjoyed watching this film and i liked it, what made it so enjoyable was that this film had its unique style to it. Chinese vampires are really very interesting, they are not just ordinary vampires we commonly know that would try to bite you with their fangs and fly away as a bat. These vampires would just hop around trying to turn you into one of them by a scratch. I enjoy how fighting is in everything they do even if a action doesn't require fighting.

A fight between a American vampire and a Chinese vampire is actually quite difficult to see who would win. I can imagine that they are both vampires so whatever they would do to each other wouldn't really affect them as much. American vampires do have sharp fangs and being able to transform to a bat. While Chinese vampires have long fingernails and only hop around as movement. Comparing these two i decided that the American vampires would win. Although i think Chinese vampires are much cooler.
