The '50s and the French New Wave

So, what'd you think of the American film from the '50s that we watched?

12 Angry Men is important to me, I love this film, and ya'll know the story why.  This movie changed my close-minded attitude when I was a bratty teenage youth (unlike you guys, who are all incredibly awesome)!  It made me realize a movie from the era of, gasp, black & white, could be good.  Really good.  GREAT even.  Yet, when you sit back and think about it, 12 Angry Men doesn't have any big special effects, or effects at all.  It doesn't have amazing locations across the globe or sweet costumes.  In fact, 99% of it took place in one location.  A big, square room.   So, why is it so good?  Well, I know my answer - but I want to know yours.  Did you like this movie?  And, why?  Give me some good, thoughtful answers as to why you liked it if you did - what makes it so good in your opinion?  Or, if you didn't really like it, that's fair, but you gotta give me a thoughtful detailed answer as to why.

And, then, we stepped away from U.S. film history for a bit and experienced a taste of the French New Wave... speaking of bratty teenagers, haha, these guys grew up to cause a huge change in French cinema, which influenced the way movies were made here, in big ways.

So, Eyes Without a Face.   What'd ya think?  Did you like it?  Why or why not?  Give me a good, deep answer here.  What did think of this poetic French artsy horror film?

  1. i thought 50's movies where interesting in both the story and effects. i liked it cuz of how the build up and how it was high tensed till the very end . i liked it cuz of how diff rent from most films i have seen and tha made it good and you had to read text to know what they were saying with i think thats kinda new the the sound films of that time and i liked it cuz of the interesting ending and the effects of the moment that they take the face off was awesome for that time but in the modern times it has been perfected so it would not be as great to someone who has seen that effect before in a modern movie so i think all the films we have watched are geart but at the same time most people would not apprentice it which makes me sad cuz there awesome films

  2. 12 Angry Men- How do you expect a movie taking place in one location and make it good? Good actors, good dialogue, and great story. What make this movie so good is how intense to is. The story gives us a simple argument into a huge big deal. The way how characters agree and disagree with each other. What really makes the story intense is the actors they make the movie very intense with emotions.
Overall there's not that much to say about it, It's just very intense you need to see it for your self to experience the movie.

  3. 12 ANGRY MEN--
I really liked 12 Angry Men, I thought it was real great, and I'm glad I own it. Except I have no Laserdisc player at home so I can't really watch it. I really liked this film because of the themes it deals with, how life and death are put into the hands of a jury of old men, who could choose to kill the guy just because they want to get out of the extremely hot room. The acting was incredibly great with all the yelling and the arguing and everything. Very realistic portrayals of angry men. The direction of the camera was interesting, how it seemed to close in on the men more and more as the film went on, making things feel tight. Sort of claustrophobic. It was really cool how almost the whole thing took place in that one room, and you didn't know any of the characters real names until the end. The story really pulls one in and you like the characters you should and really hate characters that you should hate. Mainly, the executioner would be he who is hated, quite obviously. Many reasons I like this film. Many.

    EYES WITHOUT A FACE--
This movie, I really liked a lot. I think it is one of the best films we've watched this year and I'm glad I own this one, too. Except this one I have on Blu-Ray, of course. This is the strange kind of film I usually watch on my own, I really like these kinds of weird movies. That is one of the reasons I like this film: It is wonderfully weird. Other reasons I like this film: It is also beautifully gory and violent, which is grand, it had a greatly disturbing story and a surreal atmosphere, which is excellent, the characters were strange and creepily likeable, which was cool, and then there's the ending. The macabre and delightfully satisfying ending. Such a great film this was. Incredible filmmaking it was.

  4. Personally I loved this movie and thought it was extremely great. The reason why I thought it was great was mostly because of the damn great dialogue. It was just so good, it got your full attention, and you were with the film till the end. You just wanted to know how it would conclude. It starts all normal with 12 men deciding if this kid is guilty or not and it's a hot summer day, they just want to get it over with. Without knowing much or really having any evidence all of them except for one votes guilty. They're at a pause, oh no someone thinks he's not guilty. Everything changes from that moment, the movie basically begins at that point. They all go on and on about it. The guy in the white slowly starts to get more people on his side. They go into deep conversations, it's just so interesting seeing this happen. It gets so much better towards the end. Then the ending, the ending is so great, all of them think he's not guilty except for one and he finally breaks and they all go home.

With Eyes without a face I'm not too sure if I like it or not. Sure I enjoyed the watch as much as any other movie we've watched. I suppose it's just because it was a whole lot stranger and I haven't really seen any movie like this. I didn't quite enjoy the cutting of the girls face scene, I don't know. It was apparently one of the most famous scenes in the movie but eh. They did it pretty well at the time but it kinda bothered me. I can dig the artsyness of the film. It was great, with the beginning driving scene, the strange clown type creepy carnival music. Also the characters, they were interesting. Although I really disliked the father surgeon guy, and I was more than happy with his face being mutilated by the dogs he experimented on. It was ironic and kinda funny. A lot of people didn't like the end but I enjoyed it.

  5. 12 Angry men was the only one I saw and it was by far one of the best films I have ever seen, as well as the first film I saw on Laser Disc! So compelling and when it sucks you in, you are in and you have no passage out! Plus Why would you want one!? I really liked how you had to imagine most of it - DO NOT WATCH IF YOU HAVE NO IMAGINATION - It really had a story and such a twisting turning plot! I want to watch it 10000000 more times... No just 10 will do but it is great film!

I haven't watched eyes without a face so no review, but the 50's were a good decade!

  6. I loved the movie and I thought it was great. The reason why I thought it was good was mostly because of the terrific dialogue. it got your full attention, and you were with the film till the end of course I left when we finished it so I saw the rest when I got home. 7. I loved 12 angry men! This is one of me new favorite movies. I was extremely sleep deprived when we watched it and I didn't nod off or find myself bored at any one point. I thought this movie had amazing dialogue and characters. I loved the way they showed how they all looked at the world through a small situation with a boy allegedly killing his father. Whether he did or didn't, watching the men debate was amazing.

Eyes without a face freaked the hell out of me. I don't know how I feel about it. I thought it was weird, creepy, and just morally gross at parts; but I found it enjoying to watch. I did fall asleep at some point and I missed a bit of it, but from what I saw it was a pretty cool movie. Not sure I'll continue my study into french new wave, though.

  8. 12 Angry Men
I liked this movie. I liked it considering the fact that 99% of the film took place in one location, and it was the first film I ever saw that all took place in one location, so that made it interesting for me. That's really all I have to say about that.

    Eyes Without a Face
I liked this movie. I like this movie because it is weird and strange, but it has a good story, and you got to see what it would be like if you attempted to remove someone's face. I also really like the ending because I think the father got what he deserved in the end.
