Here you can write down what you learned about French culture when you did research in class about it.

The specific research culture question you should be answering is the one that was assigned to you in class.

  1. The question assigned to me about French culture was " What inspired French New Wave?" I Googled that and found that French New Wave was stongly inspired by classic Hollywood films and Italian Neorealism. I also learned that most French films from that time were being written by novelists and they were "much more like literature than cinema." They wanted French New Wave films to cover more social issues and basically just be more entertaining. They didnt care how "crazy" their ideas were they just wanted to make a good film.

  2. What is Film Noir?

Film noir is commonly used to describe the old Hollywood Crime Dramas of the 40's and 50's. Typically black and white, these films usually incorporated low lighting, gritty characters, German expressionist cinematography, flashbacks, and obscure narrative structure.

This genre includes a lot of pessimistic films that were defined by "moral ambiguity". A lot of detective movies are noirs. Great examples of Film Noir are moives such as:

    -The Maltese Falcon
    -Scarface (1932)
    -Citizen Kane
    -Sunset Boulevard
    -Following

The first two Christopher Nolan films, (The Following, Insomnia) were classic Noirs, although he's become a Neo-Noir director, which is a branch of the Film Noir genre.

  3. C.J. Barrett:
The main inspiration for New Wave cinema was American-Made films from the time. Many of the people who could be given credit for starting the New Wave movement were François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Éric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, and Jacques Rivette, who were all critics for the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma. They said in the magazine that films from France that were being made at the time weren't as artful or expressive as films from the U.S., and encouraged French filmmakers to start making movies more reminiscent of the U.S.' cinema.

Well my question was to figure out what film nior was. The information I got was this
-A style or genre of motion picture marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism and menace. The term was originally applied to american. Film noir is mainly American films of the 1940′s and 1950′s exploring the darker aspects of modernity, and usually set in a criminal milieu or exploring the consequences of a criminal act

  5. 1834 Algeria became a French military colony. 1848 it was declared French territory. It was soon divided into 3 departments of France, Algiers, Oran and Constantine. The French Algerian War was fought over Algerian's independence. Algerian citizens would have to apply for citizenship of France and would be denied because of religion. This caused much upset. After World War II the war began. 1947 France finally gave Algerian's citizenship and the war ended.

  6. French Fashion is super weird and edgy. Their fashion is insane and odd and impractical. I doubt anyone would ever wear these things in public because a lot of these arekind of hideous.

  7. The French-Algerian war was basically about how Algerians were discriminated against by the French an all out war happened and by then end of it they were allowed to come into France and allowed citizenship following the war about 30,000 Algerians immigrated to France per year. Its a comparison to how we discriminate against the Mexicans and Imagine us having a war over it then allowing them to have a green card to come and live in America

When it come's to french dinning most people think they eat at really fancy places and all that type of things but they mostly eat just like us. While meals in France tend to be long, breakfast can be a rather quick affair. While dinner and lunch may seem like long meals with food, breakfast may seem particularly limited to thanks American standards. So there's not really that much of a difference.

My question was to figure out what a film noir was. A film noir, French for "black film," is a style or genre of motion picture marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. It is also a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. It was first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, and was unrecognized by most American film industry professionals of that era. Film noir encompasses a range of plots. The main character figure might be a policeman, a boxer, a criminal, etc. Although film noir was originally associated with American productions, films now so described have been made around the world.
