GENRES: Sci-Fi Television Shows

Think through the many television show episodes we've watched in class (e.g. Doctor Who, Twilight Zone, Star Trek: The Original Series, and Star Trek: The Next Generation) and answer two of the following questions:

Which TV show did you like best? Why? Which did you like least? Why?

What did you learn by watching these shows that will help you to write your own science fiction
script?

Did the essay we read about Star Trek: The Next Generation help you to see the show in a new light? If so, explain. If not, explain why.

Do you think science fiction works better as movies or as television series? Why?

Which of the social commentaries in the many shows we watched did you find most interesting / relevant / important? Why?

  1. My favorite thing that we watched was by far the Twilight Zone and the least would have to be Star Trek: TOS. I like TZ the most because of it's amazing ability to make you think and teach a lesson. I like ST: TOS the least because I just thought that it was way too campy and boring.
By watching these shows, I leaved that my story should have some sort of social commentary or at least just teach a lesson.
The essay did not change my views because I didn't have a prior thought or opinion on the show.
I think that science fiction works better as films because that way, you can really express the lesson/social commentary in a much more personal, less forced way.
I don't know which show had the best social commentary because I didn't notice any in any of the shows we watched.

  2. I loved Dr. Who the best out of every TV we watched. I thought it was more entertaining and I didn't feel like falling asleep during it either and I've watched a couple of episodes of Dr. Who since then which I've also found fun to watch. I also love the weirdness of Dr. Who.

I didn't like the originally Star Trek series, I thought it was boring and I almost fell asleep during it. I thought the pace of the show wasn't fast enough but it was really slow. I don't actually remember much of it because of this. Making Star Trek the Original series my least favorite show we watched.

Oh, I did love the Twilight Zone episode too. That was pretty great. But after watching a episode of Dr. Who and an episode of the Twilight Zone in the same day I was a little weirded out for the rest of the day by reasons unknown. Maybe it's because I just kept on thinking about that episode of the Twilight Zone we watched and every time I thought about it, it gave me a headache. But I loved it.

I learned a lot by the Dr. Who and the Twilight Zone episode we watched, I learned it doesn't have to be some big 'the world is ending' kind of plot. I also learned it can be simple yet still keep you thinking like the Twilight Zone episode and I actually want to write a script similar to that episode we watched but set in a high school setting. I think it would be pretty epic.

In my opinion, I think Science fiction works better in a movie but if there's a really good plot and really great characters that will keep people watching. I think it would also work great in a TV series (like Dr. Who) it actually really depends what the plot of the story is and if it would work better in a movie or a TV series. Like Invasion of the Body Snatchers wouldn't make a great Tv series and if it was a Tv series I think it would just sort of drag on after probably four episodes.

I thought the social commentary for Dr. Who was pretty great. The thing with the emotion patches that make people feel different emotions. How technically most emotions are somewhat like a drug and you can overdose on any emotion if your not to careful.

  3. I really liked all the shows a lot, (excluding Star Trek: The original series) but I have to say that Doctor Who was my favorite out of the series. I thought that the social commentary was to the point, but not forced on the audience. It also had very intriguing characters, both major and minor. It was just a great show over all.
Star Trek: The original series was just bad in my opinion. The characters were just bland and boring. the message was so blatantly obvious that it wasn't even amusing, and the theme song was just so weird! it was just boring and hard to follow overall.
I have to say that SciFi works best in a TV series. With SciFi, there is so much you can explore in a universe, that it's hard to cover it all within a 2 hour time span. Why do you think marvel movies have made several sequels to their movie and have even added a TV series to it? It just makes it easier to cover so much stuff with a series instead of a movie.
