The Golden Year

1939, Hollywood's Golden Year. So called because so many films were made that year and so many of them are remembered as classics. We watched two films from 1939 in class. They are listed below with questions about each:

Destry Rides Again (1939)

This was one of three films made in the Golden Year starring Jimmy Stewart. Perhaps that was why the year was golden: because Jimmy Stewart made a lot of movies! Destry is a Western and, prior to recent history, Westerns were a staple in Hollywood. You could always count on someone making a Western at any given time and they were successful (thus, they kept making them). But Destry is no ordinary Western. The generic gunslinging sheriff hero is replaced with a peaceful man.

Answer the following questions:
  • How do you feel about the twist of having a peaceful sheriff? Did it work for you? Or would you prefer to have the typical sheriff that takes out the bad guys with his gun and grit? Why?
  • This film is well remembered by many an intelligent person. You'll notice it is on the windows in the hallway by the studio. It's on some critic's lists of great films. Why do you think some smart film appreciators like it so much? Do you like it? Why or why not?
  • If you were to remake this film, what would you do to improve it? (And don't just say, "add color".)
Gone With the Wind (1939)

There is one word that definitely, for sure, describes this film: long. Clocking in at 3 hours and 53 minutes, it is definitely an experience to watch the whole thing. For this reason, the post on this film will be worth twice as much a normal one.

Answer the following questions about this film:
  • This film is included on the AFI 100 list. Why do you think that is?
  • Did you like this film or not? Explain in detail.
  • Do you feel this film needs to be as long as it is? Do you think it should be shorter? If you do think it's too long, explain what parts you think should be cut out and why. If you like the length, explain why you feel the story deserves this running time.

i liked this movie a lot it was a good and i don't really watch western movies but this movie was good it was cool that they had a twist with a peaceful sherif that didn't believe in using guns but i think i would rather have a sherif who shoots all of the bad guys but only in necessary situations not just shooting a guy for dumb reasons like littering and things like that just stuff like if they were shooting first or if the guy had somebody hostage stuff like that

i think smart film appreciators would like this film because it had a twist to what other people were used to seeing like what i said before sherif taking out all the bad guys and things like that, in this movie the sheriff wanted to humiliate the bad guys by putting them in a jail but his partner didn't like that but they went with the idea anyways the old guy was embarrassed at first but then he was proud in the end

there isn't a lot of things that i would change in this movie maybe that the older guy didn't die at the jail maybe at the end when they were at the bar and they were fighting and the his partner gets shot during the fight and Destry sees that and then shoots the guy that shot the old guy

    Destry Rides Again

I thought it was cool that instead of having a bad sheriff they have an actual nice kind hearted sheriff. It sets it apart from other films because you usually see a really mean sheriff.
I think people liked it so much because it was different than other westerns that they'd seen. It took a different direction then them just with having the nice sheriff.
If I were to remake this movie I would change it from a western and probably take it to like new york or something. I'd keep the plot and the characters but just change it to a new york setting because I don't really dig the western thing.

    Gone with the Wind

I think the film is on the AFI 100 list because it's culturally important. It came out during the Golden Year which was an important time in movie making history.
I didn't really like this movie. It was really long and I didn't like the music in it either. I didn't really like the main girl either she kind of annoyed me. But I liked the guy a lot. I enjoy his acting a lot which helped me get through the movie easier.
I don't think this film should be so long but I don't really know what I'd remove. The only thing I can really think of is when that one servant lady was yelling at the girl to come back or whatever cause she was yelling for a long time and it could have been the same but shorter. A lot of the scenes were pretty important for the story.

I think the twists of having a peaceful sheriff was really really cool. He never wanted to use the guns because they killed his dad in the back. He was really good with guns but he never used them on people. So yes the peaceful sheriff worked for me. I think if it was a normal sheriff with a gun then i think the movie would have been kind of boring and ended a lot faster.

This movie just has a lot of twists in it which could make the critics think like WHOAHH!! So all the twists make movies really good and surprising. Another thing they probably liked is probably how the sheriff was peaceful and how much he could do without a gun. I like this movie just because it was good, it kept me very entertained and i really liked it.

I don’t know if i would want to remake this film. i just really liked it and thought it was amazing. Everything was so good. I don’t know if i would put colors in it. This movie was made back when everything was black and white so this is what they liked, this is what they watched and it was still so good. haha i don’t know if I’m weird but i don’t really pay attention to the black and whiteness in the films. I Feel the same thing for all of them, its like their already in color but i know there not. Its like i can just make the color in my head and everything is in color.

Why does this sound like a sequel? Anyways, having a peaceful sheriff worked great. I loved it, it worked great for me. It went against what people were used to. If you show someone something they haven't seen before, they're more likely to observe it better.
I haven't seen many western's, so I can't really compare it to others, but I appreciate this film because I believe that it was it's first of its genre. Having a sheriff that doesn't use guns. Relies on the law than on weapons. That decision, however, becomes his rival at the end. Having him where his guns, that moment was amazing.
First of all, I think you guys know me well enough to know that Black and White is my stuff. If I were to remake this, the whole thing would be in Black and White as an homage to the original. I have a list of movies that people shouldn't remake, and this made the list. I think it's great as it is.

    -Gone With the Wind
Easy answer, I hope, Color. It was one of the firsts to come out in color, following Wizard of Oz (also in the AFI list). It's also something that has become part of our culture. It also showed us what life was like in the Civil War. I've heard so many people talk about this movie beforehand, and when I watched, I understood why. Besides the length, this movie ends with such a bang. Didn't expect it, and I bet know one else did either.
I actually really like this film. Scarlett was a very unique character. From the beginning I thought Scarlett would be a humble person, like Cinderella, but she turned out to be very hard-headed. I think it was wise for the writer to portray her in that way, and having her as the protagonist. There are many plots in this story, something that kept me confused at sometimes, but still kept me intrigued. If the whole movie was aimed at just one plot, the movie would seem longer, but Scarlett went through many things, and she let us join her on that ride.
I think that every moment of this film was very well used. It knew what it was. They made sure that every scene meant something. The ending, something that hit hard, would probably not have hit as hard if some scenes were cut off. It helped build the emotion. We knew everything that she's been through, and what that moment meant for her.

  5. Gone With The Wind

I think that Gone With The Wind is on the A.F.I top one hundred list because of a few reasons. One being that the entire film was shot with technicolor film, although other films could have used this colored film it was crazy expensive, so the fact that this is an almost four hour movie and used all technicolor film should earn its way onto the top one hundred list. I also think that it’s on the list because of all the really great acting. Each character had their own personality that you could see and feel on the screen. Then you throw in all the beautiful lighting and interesting camera shots, why wouldn’t this be on the top one hundred list?

I liked Gone With The Wind, it didn’t become a favorite of mine but I did enjoy it. I enjoy all of the acting, while it had moments of melodramatic responses it wasn’t out of character for the person to act that way. I feel all the actors really knew their characters and it made everything seem very in the moment. It was far too long for my taste but watching it in multiple parts helped.

I do feel the film is too long but I really enjoyed all the plot points and plot twists they had in the film. I feel the scene with Ms. Scarlett and Ms. Melly in the hospital was unnecessary for plot purposes but I liked it for the sake of seeing the contrast between Melly and Scarlet. I also don’t think Scarlett's father becoming daft was necessary, although it added some humor into the poverty scenes and it’s understandable why it just wasn’t vital to the story. The character of Ms. Belle wasn’t needed in my opinion, but I did enjoy her character quite a bit. This question is really hard for me because although I think it was too long I wouldn’t want to cut anything out except for maybe trim a few clips or scenes.

    Destry Rides Again

Michi had priorities to attend to.

  6. Gone with the wind

I think this film is on the list because 1) it was one of the first films to be in Technicolor. 2) It was so long and so much work was put into making this film 3) it got to people because it was about the war. I really enjoyed this film. I was never bored with it, it actually inspired me to start reading the incredibly long book.

I feel like this film did need to be as long as it was. The book is so long that if the movie wash shorter you wouldn't even get the entire story. The movie could have been longer even, and I would have been perfectly fine with that. In fact it should have been longer I think. I feel like more detail could have been included.

The story just has so much going on, so many different little things, so many feelings, and deaths. If it would have been any shorter, so many feelings would have been left out. I already think the part where scarletts daughter passed away and everyone was in mourning passed far too quickly. Still, this movie was great.

  7. Destry rides Again-
I liked the twist, I thought it was a very good change in the typical western. But at the same time I wish it would have had just a bit more gun play, and have the woman live. But then again I really did like how it brought peace to the Podunk town.
I think they like it because it was different, like bringing civilized actions to those without a leader. I liked how it was actually sweet and caring at some points instead of rough and tough. I think that sometimes it's nice for a change, and that's why (i feel) that they liked it.
Add color. Just kidding, I would make it so that the woman didn't die, and that everyone in town not only chilled out but also kinda like, made the Sharif the mayor because I think he would've done so much better running the town.

    Gone with the Wind-
Honestly I don't see why 'Gone with the Wind' was even on the AFI's 100's list. I hated every moment of it. (Saying this with all due respect. It looks as if someone put a lot of hard work into making this. I just could't get into it no matter how hard I tried.)
I think the reason why I hated this move so so much is that we were following a spoiled brat and her whorish adventures. It was all about bettering yourself by stepping on others and using other's heartbreak and demise as your stepping stone. Not only that, but she didn't even really change at the end. Sure she realized she had lost the dude who actually liked her (he was nuts.) But she only took it as another challenge, she just wanted to get him back! This left me pissed off and extremely put out. And yes I realize I'm bashing this movie, but frankly dear I don't give a damn!
This could've been made in to a two hour feature film. It absolutely didn't need to be as long as it was. Sure the attention to detail was ok, but sometimes you don't need to know how many flowers are on the side of the road as the character walks quietly. There was just a lot of pointless detail to this, I think if you kept all the main parts, there would be a least 2 hours of useless footage that doesn't actually have anything to do with the main plot.

  8. So kitties, let's start with Destry Rides Again. First off I want to say that his was an entertaining western film and it has earned it has place among the great western films.
To answer you first question, I will say that I loved that Destry was a peaceful and well mannered man. His intellect and logical knowledge combined with his witty charm made him a very attractive character in my eyes. I can see why this film is appreciated by so many. It's thrilling, entertaining, has a deep and interesting story, and follows a very promising plot line. If I were to remake this film I wouldn't add color. I would keep it black and white. In fact, I would keep it pretty much the same over all... I loved it the way it is, but if I had to sit down and find ways to improve the movie through remake, I'm sure would come up with something.

Now on to Gone With the Wind. Just let me start with saying, I really hated Scarlet about 3/4 of the way into the movie. She was manipulative and made me want to choke her. Anyways, enough of my violent fantasies, this really was an amazing movie and it has more than earned its place on the AFI 100 list. The length of this film was fully appropriate. I had no problem with the length, and personally I think movies should be made in that length today. I like being able to watch it in pieces and think about what I watched before continuing the story. Watching everything at once and being rushed to understand what is going on is not all that pleasurable to me.
There you have it. My required opinion to these movies. Now hand over the points and nobody gets hurt.

  9. gone with the wind

I think the reason this movie is on the AFI 100 list because it is just a really good movie. This movie is just really long but id say it is sooo worth all the time. It was fun to see it in color but i did not really notice as much as i thought i would have. This movie had a lot of long slow parts, but other parts of this movie make up for the long parts.

I did like this movie but it was really good... But i didnt really like how scarlet was just like so stuck up or whatever. She hated everyone because her crush didnt like her back haha. But then again i think about how much i liked this movie, so i think that this movie probably would have been very different if all of scarlets boy problems never happened . If I could, i dont think that i would change anything about this movie because i liked how everything happened.

I think this movie is a good amount of time for the whole story it was telling. It was ok because everything just got better and better to me. like not better but i mean like i was liking it more and more as i watched it. I asked Will the other day if all the fire stuff was real, and he said it might be. So i thought about the part with the big building falling down during the war and if that was real i think that is sooooo cool!!! it must have taken a while to build it, and it must have sucked for the people who built it to watch something that was soo hard to build fall down in flames.

  10. gone with the wind

I think that this movie was on the AFI 100 list because it was a great movie you could tell this movie too a lot of time and effort because for one the movie is four hours long and it had effect like fire and falling buildings and they had to keep that going through out the whole movie and the movie was in color and that was a very important in film history especially cause the whole movie was in color
I did like this movie because it was really good and it was long and I like long movies especially if they can keep you going through out the whole movie and I also liked it because the main character wasn’t really the good guy just because she married one guy just to make another guy jealous and then she married another guy just for his money and still loved the other guy
I did like the length time of this movie I do think deservers this time because it was a great movie it had different problems through out the movie like the war and making the guy that she loves love her and going through depression cause of so many deaths and then having a new husband that she doesn’t love and then having a baby that neither of them were ready for

I think having a peaceful sheriff is a cool and innovative twist on western films. it's not just your cookie cutter, everyday, western shoot em up extravaganza that you see all the time, and i thought it was cool. it made it cooler to see the sheriff gain control without a gun or aggressive force. it's really pointless and stupid to watch a western where the sheriff solves all of his problems through shooting people and yelling "yee-haw!!'
The reason this film is so good is because it doesn't follow the basic rules of a western. It changed how westerns could be made. It didn't need to be action packed to be a good film. I personally enjoyed it a lot and think that this is one of the best westerns ever made.
There Isn't much i would or could do to make this a better film. it's really good all on it's own. I add color and maybe change some of the scoring, but that' really all.

I think that it was a good twist on what most sheriffs were like. They all carried guns around. But destry wasn't like that.I would rather have a peaceful sheriff because he didnt kill people like other sheriffs would. He showed people how good he could use a gun.
I think that people liked it because it wasn't like other western. In other westerns sheriffs always have guns and in this one he didn't like to use guns because his dad got killed by one.He would rather talk to people than shoot them. Personally i did like this movie, and i usually don't like westerns
If i had to remake this movie i would change the ending to where the lady doesn't die in the end. She would probably still get shot but in the leg or arm. So she wouldn't die. I think that's mostly what i would change about this movie.

I think that it was on the AFI's top 100 list because it was the first movie to be in all color. Also it took a lot of effort to make it.And they worked hard on this movie especially because it was about 4 hours long. And probably took along time to make this movie.
I didn't see the beginning of the movie because i was gone. But i seen the rest of it and i thought it was a good movie. Even though it was really long and hard to sit through the whole movie. But it was pretty good to me.
I think that the time was okay. Maybe just a little bit shorter but it was a good movie. There were some boring parts in the movie that could have been taken out. And the unimportant parts could have been taken out too. Just so they could have made the movie a little bit shorter.

  14. Destry Rides Again (1939)

I feel the twist of having a peaceful sheriff is great. It teaches a great lesson, works for the time period and allows for some great sarcasm and humor in the film. It worked great for me. I honestly believe that the role of a sheriff is to protect and to serve in the most effective and efficient way. A gun works great but, it provokes fear and distrust. If you can do it without a gun then you've got respect. That's worth fear 1000X's over.

I think some smart film appreciators like it so much because it's so relevant to life, it's got great humor and the hero is a true hero. Honestly I love it. I love the way the hero behaves.

If I were to remake this film I would make it with a little better sound quality and current instruments to improve it. Honestly I feel that that's the only thing that could or should ever be changed about it. Change anything else and you might lose the greatness.

    Gone With the Wind (1939)

I believe that this film is on the AFI 100 list because it told the story of the civil war from a different perspective than most people were used to and it, although being pretty obnoxious, was pretty decently told.

I did not actually like this film. The main character is whiny and weak even to the very end. The main point of the film is a barely rememberable, "home is where the heart is", that was only referenced twice in the whole film. the deaths were pointless. they served near no point except to attempt to build sympathy for the main character but, it fails to do that as she has little to no noticeable character development. She starts out as a rich, stuck up, devil may care, snob who only ever wants what she can't have and that's exactly what she is in the end. Only difference is that she's got a bigger appreciation of the land she has. It just really didn't work for me.

I do not feel this film needs to be as long as it is. I mean in order to tell the story like the book does you need that length but, the book spends 3 chapters on the red clay land just describing it. I don't believe the description of the land or the gratuitous deaths were really worth the film but, that's just my opinion. I believe that the parts where she's just throwing a tantrum should be pulled or any time the slave young high pitched slave was on screen should have been pulled from the screen as recording that voice was a mortal sin.

I like the way the sheriff was peaceful it really helped to connect with him. so yes it did work for me. as for having the typical gun and grit sheriff, it is good to have a change with the way he was portrayed. Because they showed that he was good with guns but he didn't like them so it sort of showed him being a better person with the way he handled the problems that came up in the movie.

I think they like it because it has a very good storyline especially the beginning. It sort if keeps you guessing who the good guy is and who the bad guy is. Also the sheriff was smart with how he didn't use guns he seemed to always was prepared for everything that was thrown at him. And as for me I am a fan of westerns I enjoy watching them so yes I enjoy this movie because it is different from an ordinary western which really made it work for me.

If I were to remake this film I would keep it black and white but I would have better deaths in it, well more convincing ones. But other than that I would keep it the same because again I really enjoyed it.

This film must be included on the AFI 100 list because it is such a great film the storyline is great, the characters are great. The character development is so amazing in this move I really enjoyed watching it because of the characters.

I liked it because of how the story was set up I didn't mind how long it was because of how the characters changed died and got better or worse but something I didn't like was how scarlet acted she was very repetitive and it bugged me for some reason and I don't know why but besides that I enjoyed this movie.

I think this film was the perfect length. because it is long doesn't mean its bad it is a great movie because it is about civil war time where there are slaves. And they are in the south then they loose and It just keeps going from there it has a great storyline and I feel it follows the book well.

    Gone With the Wind

This film is definitely deserving of the AFI list. It does very well in all 4 of the criteria to get on the list. It is technically innovative and artistically important because it was one of the first entirely color film, which was obviously important since we continued the transition. It is also very culturally important and almost anyone has heard of gone with the wind and they probably quote it without knowing it. Finally it is definitely historically important since it covers the souths point of view on the civil war.

I liked this movie a ton. It is basically an ultimate movie. It has action, romance, comedy, and any other thing you can think of. It also has awesome acting and a very interesting story. It makes you hate the characters and love them at the same time. It also has Clarke Gable who is one of the best actors ever.

I think it needed to be that long. It is an adaptation of a book and to cover it accurately they needed the time. None of the scenes in this movie are wasted. Also investing that much time into the movie makes it worth more to you personally so if you like it or not you will either hate it or love it.

  18. Destry Rides Again wasn't too bad of a movie, I enjoyed that the town had a peaceful sheriff. It gave it a nice twist that gave enough difference to enjoy. I personally am not really a western guy though so its not like the movie was very awesome. I still appreciate all the work and dedication poured in plus I think Destry's story is really nice.

I think critics really enjoyed this movie because of what I just mentioned: difference. Having your typical good old western movie is just kinda eh but when the sheriff is peaceful instead of shoot em' up it creates not a huge difference but enough to attract attention. I'm half and half with this movie with like and dislikes, it wasn't too bad.

Hmm if I were to recreate this movie first things I would do is make it more mysterious. I wouldn't want just a plain town it'd need some eeriness to it. I think another thing I would do is make sure everybody is clean, even though its a cowboy film I just couldn't handle it if everyone was dirty. Whoever played Destry is a talented actor.

  19. I really don't understand how Gone With The Wind got on the AFI list. Throughout the entire movie I almost felt lost. Their was tons of stuff happening and going down but I feel like too much was happening. They were constantly jumping from person to person and story to story so it just really confused me on what was actually going on haha.

I would say overall I didn't really enjoy this movie too much but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate all it did for lots of people. It seems like the majority of people do like this movie and enjoyed it a lot. It was just so hard to enjoy for myself because of the pacing, being confused all through out the movie sucked pretty bad but oh well I guess.

I for sure think this movie should be shorter and I think lots of scenes were really unnecessary to the point where I would ponder why they even put it in the movie. The very first scene for example I thought was completely unnecessary because it didn't really say or introduce much besides a couple of people that only play a small part for this huge movie.

  20. Destry Rides Again

This film is taking a leap of faith having the deputy be peaceful and not violent. I really enjoyed The twist, it made it seem more realistic than a regular western film. If you think about it this film wouldn’t have a very good story without the peaceful deputy. In fact they would have a completely different story.
Like I said before this film is not a typical western film. It doesn’t follow the same guide lines that western films go by. It has a more realistic sensation, which I find pleasurable. That is why I think so many individuals appreciate this film. Yes I like this film, in fact I might even love it.

If I were to remake this film I would add color. (Just because you said not to say that) But seriously I wouldn’t want to change anything. I adored the film the way it is. I loved how they solved the problem without a lot of violence .

    Gone with the wind

This film deserves to be on the 1oo list because it’s just great. Even though it’s really long this film keeps you locked in its grasp through the whole thing. It also feels realistic nothing seems scripted even though I know it is. If I didn’t know better I would think it was just randomly filmed.
I loved this movie a lot. They crossed the line with the code. But “frankly my dear I don’t give a damn”. This movie had an evil twist at the end. The love story didn’t end like a normal love story. At first this upset me but I have come to terms with it. Besides it never said they never get together after that. Who knows maybe ten minutes later Rett turns around and goes back to her and they live happily ever after and have another child named Ben.
This story could go either way stay long or be shortend at all depends on who is watching and “ frankly my dear I don’t give a damn.” If someone shortens it than good for them they can do what they want. But it is fine the way it is.

I think the idea of a peaceful sheriff is very interesting and this movie used it very well. For me I thought it was very good and well done and it subtly promotes not using violence to resolve conflict. Personally I like the typical sheriff more. As good as I think this movie is i just think normal sheriffs are more fun to watch since its more of an adventure as the person watching the movie.

I think it gets it appreciation because it didn't go the traditional path of violence and grit that westerns usually take, but it still created a character you were rooting for the whole time and it ends with a better moral message. Also because they didn't go the normal way it shows that the filmmakers care about what they were doing and weren't just trying to create another western for profit and they wanted to make a genuinely good movie which is appreciated.

I personally think that it should be as original as possible. They should get actors with the same attitude and personality so they can try to bring that same Jimmy Stewart feel to the movie so you know where it came from. Also keeping it the same would allow people who haven't seen the original to appreciate it just as much. The only thing i would change would be the effects just to give it a more realistic feel so it would have its own characteristics as opposed to the original.

  22. Gone With The Wind wasn't one of my favorite films, In fact, it was far from it. But nevertheless i still was a good film. They just tried to put a ton of things into a film that didn't need all of that. I think that if they'd have put less stuff in it, or at least compressed what they had, it would've been a good film. Most films i've seen aren't 4 hours, so i'm not used to sitting through that long of a film.
I think shortening this film would've made it better. Making this film as long as it is was a bad idea. They had all of the resources to make it shorter. Some parts of the story seemed entirely too long. I was kinda fading in and out of watching this film because it was really hard to sit through it without breaks.
Although I didnt enjoy this film, i can still understand why it made the AFI 100 list. This film was the first film to ever be fully in color and thats cool. Plus, they put so much time and money into this film to make sure it was still a great film. so I can understand why it holds a place in film history's heart.

  23. Gone with the wind
oh sweet mary mother of god this movie was long, and not the good kind of long in which the minutes feel like seconds. No this movies is more like seconds feeling like minutes. Nevertheless I can completely understand why this excessively long movie would be added to the AFIs movie like for special movies. It did one of the awesomest things a movie could’ve done for its time, be completely done in colour, how magical.
No I did not like this movie, in fact, I would say I hated this movie, so much so that I might consider it number one on my personal worst movies list. Why do I hate this movie? Its pacing, which is one the slowest pacings I have seen in a movie, caused it to be so long, it up there in length with Freakin LORD OF THE RINGS. thats too long for a romance.
I swear, this movie could’ve been done in half, nay, a third of the time if it didn’t decide to go so slowly. It was so needlessly slow, and with so many useless scenes, that Stephen King himself would think is too long. And for the life of me, I cannot figure out why that one quote has become so famous.

  24. Gone With the Wind meets all four of the criteria. It was one of the first films to use color. The message is timeless. The message was ahead of its time. Scarlett’s attitude about women and their place in society is innovative not only for the Civil War era, but also for the late 1930’s. She is definitely a role model for women today. Vivien Leigh acting carries the film. Without her performance, the movie would not be as popular as it still is.
I absolutely love this film. The costumes, the acting, and the overall message. I loved the part where they burned Atlanta. It’s so realistic. I could easily put myself in the character’s shoes. I am so jealous of the wardrobe in this film. Scarlett’s dresses were more than just costumes, they became part of the story. Especially the green curtain dress.
I think it’s the perfect length. If it was any shorter, there wouldn’t be enough time to properly portray the message of the character development. This movie isn’t there just to entertain you, if that was the case, sure , make it shorter. It draws you in, educates you, inspires you, and changes you.
