Canadian Short Films

Visit the website www.nfb.ca and watch at least three movies. Only one of the movies can be from the home page. The other two must be found on the site but not on the home page. Pick the one short film that you find which you like best and post a link to it in the comments below. Then, also write why you liked this film, which purposes of Canadian film that you feel it fulfills, and what you learned about the style of Canadian films by visiting this site.

This is the best one ever! I COULD NOT stop laughing!! I thought it was very creative how the movie was done just by two guys' voices, even the sound effects! I also really loved the part where the old people find the baby on the door step, and their dog gets super jealous, and does everything to make the old people notice him, by vaccuuming and doing the dishes. If only my dog would do that!! This was definately a great film, and I hope all of you enjoy it also!! (:

I know we were supposed to only choose one short film.. But I really enjoyed this one also, it was very funny and educational, just like the Canadians like it!! This is a great example of one of the Canadian film purposes. It's meant to show you what the effects of smoking can do to you, and how to help with that, sounds boring right? But it really wasn't! It kept me laughing alot by some of the things they showed, and the mouse in this short film is hilarious! Enjoy!!

    1. Good work posting your favorite film and stating why you liked it. Thank you for sharing!

Now, be sure to add your response to the other two questions: what purposes of the Canadian Film Board does this movie fulfill, and what did you observe about the style of Canadian film by watching the three films from the site?

I chose this film because it made me think. This was made using submitted photos and other peoples videos as an ode to Canada I guess. It just made me feel for Canada in a way. Plus, I detested the captions. So I thought I'd share it. and yeah.

I really liked this short film because i can relate to it a lot. I was sent to a place kinda like she was in. I like how arround the end the doctor guy was saying how noraha only kept wanting to go out with older men because the first time she got hurt by the older guy so she wanted her mom to finally not allow her to go out with older guys so that she didn't get hurt. I can relate to that because sometimes I will do things over and over just so that my mom will not let me do them anymore so that I don't get hurt. An example of this is I relly like this kid and my mom don't like him at all but she would never force me to not talk or see him but If she did I would like it because it would keep me form getting hurt because he don't really care about me at all.

    1. This is a great response, Tayia. I love how you are able to personally connect with the film. This thought could be the start of a great film essay where you relate your life to what you are seeing in the film. I love to see how self aware you are. It is a very good thing for us to be aware of why we do what we do.

Have you told your mom about this? It could be a really good thing to do so.

I liked this short because it was funny and is what i think having a kid would be like. i think the purpose of this film was to be educational because it says that having a kid isnt easy, you need to be ready for it. and i learned that canadian film isnt meant to look good or make money its mostly to be entertaining and bring a messege out.

    1. Ashton, you covered each of the subjects matters you were asked to discuss. Good work. Pat yourself on the back. I would love to hear more about each thing so that your response fills two paragraphs and communicates more fully what you mean.

This one was really cute and funny. We liked how it looked like the film was made entirely out of play dough. We loved how the polar bear just kinda sits there and ponders his situation before suddenly going into attack mode and wanting to eat everything. How he tries to get a job to save the melting ice caps is cute and we love the simple solution he found at the end: just putting ice cubes into the arctic ocean. His little hat was way cute, too. Maybe the film is trying to say that not every solution needs to be difficult. It could be a simple solution and still work just as well as a more thought out solution.

I enjoyed this short film due to how I, and probably most people, can relate to it. Expressing oneself has always been oppressed at one time or another, whether it be music (such as in this short) or literature, visual art, or another less-common form of self-expression. I think this film was approved by the NFB due to its shedding light on a social cause, and also, could be a way of preserving culture, if you look at it from the right angle. From what I watched, I found that Canadian movies really are similar to the U.S' indie films. I also found the use of subtlety, and story telling through non-monologues much more prominent.(which aren't very common in U.S. cinema, I think)

This film deserves an honorable mention due to it simply being awesome.

    1. C.J., thank you for your very thorough response that addresses all the requested points. I agree that Canadian cinema is more like our indie films. I am curious what you mean by the term "non-monologue". Please explain. I eagerly await your response :)

I liked this film because it made my laugh and it was unlike any short film (animated or not) you would see from Hollywood. I believe this film promoted non-bullying. Or at least, thats what i got from it.. It basically taught me not to disrespect the things or people around me because they could retaliate and i could end up looking like a fool.

i liked this movie because it was funny and serious at the same time. it was cute, and i liked the moral of the story. it was short enough to stay intertained and long enough to put the piont accross. i think this movie was made to bring awareness to saving animals, and it shows how animals like them dont fit in our world. i thought it was cute and very much so recommend to watch it:)
