A delightful combo of American film history and the legendary Japanese classic Seven Samurai, this movie was written and made by filmmakers who love silent films, who understand the genre of comedy, and who appreciate the often replicated story of Kurosawa's beloved film. These filmmakers know their stuff.
Why is studying black and white comedies a valid use of your time? More than just to get a grade in your class, I really want to know what you think. The makers of Three Amigos didn't make it for a grade in school, they made it with love for the time period and with love for silent comedies. Is watching films from the silent era worth our time? Why?
Did seeing this film help you appreciate silent comedies more? Why?
Is there anything you learned about the time period of silent films from this movie that you didn't know before?
*Genre studies students, here an extra question for you: does this movie give you any sort of ideas on things you might want to include in or apply to your scripts?

ReplyDeleteI think that studying black and white comedies is a valid use of time because it helps you get an understanding of film history. It helps you understand how the first comedies for those movies were and such. Basically it's just really interesting and fun to learn about and watch. The humor of old comedies is interesting and pretty cool, it's definitely much more different then movies now a days. Silent comedies use a different kind of comedy, they mostly use actions.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think that watching films from the silent era is worth your time. It's something that's good to know about if you're really into films. Even if your not, it's still fun. Yeah It helped me appreciate comedies more. I appreciate all the actions and visual jokes they do, it works together and fits with it. I learned that in most places around that time that they didn't have cinemas yet so they just set up a projector at some place and have a live keyboardist. Also that they used blanks at that time. But all in all I enjoyed the movie and I'm glad I saw it, it was pretty good.
I am going to be very honest I want to like this movie but I just feel empty after watching it. I'm just going to say it I don't like this movie I Don't hate it but it's just not my thing. Even though I like to give this movie credit for bringing in the silent film era in the movie and making it look like the 1920's. Some jokes are funny I just mostly giggled for a few seconds only one joke made me laughed so hard and that's scene where the bad guy says "Whats going on here are Amegios just falling from the sky" hilarious.
ReplyDeleteBut for the most part I just not a big fan of this movie. The story isn't that great we heard this story from other movies Chicken Run, A Bug's Life, Tropic Thunder etc. The actors are good but most of them (mostly Steve Martin) are sometimes very annoying. Some of the Mexican stereotypes are so bland mostly the love interest, the villages, and the Villains.
Overall it's not horrible but it's one that I think it could be good seeing once. Okay comedy, not so good characters, and not all that good of a story.

I came in halfway through this, but what I saw I really enjoyed!
ReplyDeleteI do think studying silent films has been worth our time. They kind of show us how far we've come in all these years. It didn't really help me enjoy silent films, though.
Studying silent films is a good use of time because they are part of history and history is important.
ReplyDeleteWatching silent films from the silent film era is worth our time because silent films are awesome and they are a part of history.
Seeing this made me appreciate silent comedies more.
I learned that people back then seeing silent films for the first time didn't know what they were and they didn't know that they were fictions.
