HAROLD LLOYD in The Freshman (1925)

We continue our exploration of the work of Harold Lloyd.  Charming, relatable, kind, he exudes goodness and hope.

Many "college" films since this one embody the same spirit and themes.  A new guy comes to college wide-eyed and full of eager ambition!  Only to get trampled down physically and emotionally by the school bullies.  He has to get past these bullies and fight for his dreams (which they honestly might not be very good at, but they put their whole soul into), while learning to believe in himself in the process.  Monsters University seems to honor The Freshman in just that way, and knowing how filmically wise the writers of Pixar are, I am sure this movie was in many ways an inspiration for theirs.

So, what did you think of this classic?

Starting at a new school is often a hard and awkward time.  Do you think this film did a good job representing that?

Even though it was made 90 years ago, did you still relate to the character?   In what ways?

What lessons about life did you pull from this film?  What messages told then still apply to you, your life, your relationships, and finding yourself, today?

Would you recommend this film to others?

Answer these questions in the comments below, and please share any other insights you have about this film and your experience watching it.

  2. i think it was a great movie which is the roots to all collage movies the music they used is so good and the charters are more interesting then alot of others cuz the charters are relocatable and instead of a guy who is super cool guy they had a shy nerd which that is awesome more people will enjoy it so my final thoughts its a great movie with charters you can relate too and enjoy so if you have not watched it you should ~yami gaia (jesse miller)

  3. This was probably my favorite Harold Lloyd film we watched in this class. It did a fantastic job representing the transition of going to a new school, just the right amount of awkwardness and it portrait how hard it is starting something new, how difficult it is going to a new school.

I related to the character somewhat, I'm awkward when it comes being social. The lessons I pulled from this film about life is always be yourself and don't change to try to become popular. If they don't like you for who you are, they aren't truly friends.

I would recommend this film to others.

  4. I thought that this was a very good classic film that we watched in class. It's probably one of the first really old silent films that I've ever seen. I liked and enjoyed it very much, and am looking forward to watching more classic films. Some people think that silent films are somewhat difficult to watch now a days because you have to have your full focus on the movie and just pay attention to it (unlike most movies today). For me I found it pretty easy to just sit and enjoy the movie.

Yes, I think that this movie represents that going to a new school is often difficult and awkward. I think this because when he first goes to the school he obviously doesn't know any on there and tries to fit in and such. He was really admired by this one movie he saw about a college boy and acts and dresses like the character thinking the others will think it's cool. By doing that he embarrasses himself and sadly everyone laughed and made fun of him. Everyone just basically thought he was lame, but then at the end when he scored 6 points on the football game and it made his team won everyone cheered for him. He was no longer "lame" and got the girl.

  6. I really enjoyed this film. This film expressed being at a new school in a very accurate and entertaining way. I related to this character a lot. I remember first starting at a school and trying as hard as I could to fit in. The message this film delivered to me was, "Be yourself.", this message still applies. I would totally recommend this film to others. It's fantastic.

  7. I loved this film so much the quirkiness of Harold Lloyd is surely present.
I cant relate to the film right now but in middle school I acted like somebody I wasn't but ever since I let go of the person I wanted to be and the person I actually was then my life has been a lot better. I can see so many references especially to the most recent Monsters University. I would definitely recommend this film whether it be just a good watch or help with a problem that the character is going through that they can relate to.

  8. This is one of my favorite Harold Lloyd films and will always be one of my favorite silent films. I am in love with his comedic timing and his capability to have the audience understand all the jokes that aren't physical comedy. Even some of the jokes that consist of one joke holding its weight through a long scene. Harold finds a way to make it refreshing, giving a different viewpoint and making it funny all over again.
I think this films perfectly portrays how it feels to be a new student; as a new student want to try your hardest to leave a good impression on the people who will soon be your peers. Sometimes you even ending up pushing it and pretending or acting a way that you aren't because of the fear that your peers won't accept you. Harold tries so hard to be like the character in the movie "The College Hero" that he completely disregards the fact that this may not be who he really is. I feel like at first in a new environment we just try so hard to fit in completely forgetting who we are for a couple days but usually we realize that we shouldn't have to hid who we are just to feel accepted.
I understood how Harold felt when starting college feeling like he just wanted to fit in and just enjoy college with all his new friends. Even when he eventually finds out that all his so called "friends" were just making fun of him the whole time. I think i related to that most of all, just the feeling that people you thought cared about you could actually give a rats ass about you and just kept you along as a laugh. But i will always remember how even in his darkest time Harold kept his chin high and his hopes. That is the best thing to take from this film is that even when everyone you know has given up, don't let them get to you just keep your held high and never let them touch your dreams.
This is one of my favorite silent films i would recommended the hell out of this movie!

  9. This one is now my favorite silent films. I thought this was a lot better than Safety Last it's more interesting and more funny than Safety Last.

At first when I heard the story I said to myself "Oh it's just going to be another lame movie about the one trying to get in to college trying to be the popular one and they found out he's not popular it will get all sappy then he would do something to make a speech about being yourself bla bla bla". When I watched the movie it had the same plot as I expected but for some reason it feels more new and fresh in this movie than the other college movies. I guess what makes this film feel different is the comedy and they acting. Again I love how silent films can be funny by just showing the character's emotion and reactions.

You will feel good around this character. The main character is also very relate able I have been there when I was the youngest in Jr. high when I was a Seventh grader.

Overall I love this movie a lot more than Safety Last. It's more clever, more funny, and great acting
    A+

  10. Cameron Olsen . . . The Freshman

I thought this film was really great. I think I like Safety Last! more but still... if SL! were a 10/10 then, in comparison, The Freshman is a good 9. I thought this was really funny, especially the suit-falling-apart-scene. You really get to love Harold Lloyd's nerdy little freshman character, therefore making his jokes feel even funnier. I think this film was a great representation of what it is like going to a new school, in all its strange awkwardness. I relate very much with the character, in that I'm am incredibly awkward at talking the people, and pretty much anything to do with socializing makes me cringe... unless that socializing is with awesome people... like Will McAllister... that guy's frickin' amazing...

Lessons for life I pulled from this film: Be yourself and you will be accepted by others, I think. That message applies to me because it is a sort of a way to become accepted, and I have trouble in that area. Knowing what to do to become accepted by fellows in school.

I would recommend this film to others: for all the reasons I explained why I liked it in the first paragraph of this response.

To end things, this film was great, and Harold Lloyd IS the bomb.

  11. I loved this movie, I think that this one of the first fish out of water films, and I really like those kind of movies. It really was a relatable movie too because he wasn't liked, and most people thought he was just a bumbling buffoon causing a bunch of accidents, and I feel that I and many other people fit that profile in many ways. Plus, it was hilarious! The crazy things he got himself into were so surreal and quirky, I think this movie is absolutely charming.

The lesson I learned from this movie are pretty basic, Don't let others put you down. Harold refused to let others think badly of him,he always tried his hardest a pushed his way to the top. And the best ting is that he was often pushed aside, but he refused to stay at bottom. He just back up.

Overall, this is the best Harold Lloyd movie I've seen, and I would recommend this to everyone.
