CHARLIE CHAPLIN in The Kid (1921)

This was Mr. Chaplin's first feature film, everything he made before was short films.  How do you think he did?  Did you like the movie?  Why or why not?

Chaplin grew up completely destitute in England, he never forgot what it was like to be poor.  How does this come out in the film?  His first child died after only 3 days.  Historians suspect that was a major influence for this film; I agree.  How did knowing Chaplin's personal history affect your experience watching this film?  Would you agree that it is important to know about the filmmakers lives when studying film history?  Why or why not?

What things did you notice about Chaplin's comedic style?  What similarities are their between him and Lloyd and Keaton?  What differences do you see?

Genre kids, answer this too:  Did this film help spark any ideas in writing a silent film screenplay?

  2. I did like this movie a lot! It had a lot more emotion than every other silent film we've watched. Without knowing the background story, you know this movie is important to Chaplin. Chaplin's comedic style is in the subtleties of everyday life. The similarity to Keaton and Lloyd, to me, was in the slapstick. The difference is how he reacts to the situation, and how he got there in the first place. (Brennan Hanks)

  3. This one is a classic from Charlie Chaplin. This is probably my favorite from his tramp movies I know theres City Lights and Modern Times but this one is my favorite. Charlie Chaplin is so much different than Harold Llyod and Buster Keaton. His movies are so different instead of the hero getting a girl story he does something different and original. That's what I mostly like about this movie is the story it's very heart warming movie about a poor tramp trying to raise a child.

The acting was great. Charlie Chaplin has more emotional acting than Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. They have this happy and confused faces but Charlie has every emotion. The best actor to me in the movie was the kid it just makes me think how talented this kid is in his 5 or 4 years old.

Even though this is a drama it's also a comedy and it fits well with the story. Theres a bunch of funny moments my favorite is the kid almost getting caught with the cops.

Overall I love this movie it's very important in film history for putting in really heart felt movie.

  5. I think that Charlie Chaplin did phenomenal for his first feature length film. Mostly everything about this movie was really great. Yes I loved this movie, It was really funny, and also really sad and touching. The relationship between Chaplin and the kid was just amazing. It was really emotional and touching, it made me have feels. The slapstick humor in the movie was pretty entertaining. The movie had a lot of meaning to it, with Charlie and the kid.

Knowing Chaplin's personal history does indeed affect my experience with the film. Knowing how his kid died at 3 days old just makes it so much more depressing. Seeing how Charlie acts with the kid is just, wow, it's pretty amazing. Yes I would agree that knowing about the film makers life is important to know about with watching the movies. It makes the whole experience with watching it so different, but in a good way. But yeah, I don't really know what to say about this movie.

  6. I loved this movie, The Kid. It's pretty incredible that it was Chaplin's first feature. He did a great job. When we first viewed it, it was my favorite silent film ever. This opinion changed within a day, when we watched City Lights. It is still one of my favorite silent films, just not my very top of the list favorite. My top of the list favorite is either City Lights or Modern Times. Can't pick which one... hurm.... well. Well, going back to The Kid, but first going back even farther to Buster Keaton's film week, as you may probably remember, when writing the responses for BK's films I would praise them for their mix of comedy and drama, but how BK did that was nothing to how Charlie Chaplin did that, and I already saw that with this film (The Kid). BK's drama that is with his comedy is a lot more suspense and action type drama, but as seen with The Kid and all his other films, Charlie Chaplin's drama is a lot more sad emotional type drama, which is very incredible to have in a silent comedy. This is why I loved the film The Kid. The intense and amazing mix of comedy and drama. The strange religious imagery and implied hidden meaning were pretty great, too, and were another definite reason I liked this film.

Chaplin being poor as a young man came out in the film in that it really shows what it was probably like to be poor. The poverty is a very sad thing, but those who live through it try to keep positive and try to find things to do for money and fun. Knowing of the death of Chaplin's child definitely made the sad scenes in the film sadder. It is important to know of filmmakers lives when learning film history because it can change the way you see a film.

Chaplin's comedy style is very slapstick-ish. It is similar to Lloyd's and Keaton's because it is physical comedy just as their comedy styles are. It is different because it is a lot more slapstick-ish physical comedy than their styles. Chaplin's style has the most all-out slapstick, while Keaton's has less that his but more than Lloyd, who's comedy style is the least all-out slapstick-ish of the three.

  8. I love this movie a lot its movies like these why I enjoy chaplin so much it what makes it different from the others a heart warming story with as much as comedy to go around, very slapstick and very serious is what I would call it. I love the background that has to do with it to the hard times he was going through really shine through remarkably throughout the film. I think its a good idea to see what the director is coming from especially movies such as these where there are hidden messages throughout including the angel scenes

  9. I think Charlie Chaplin did very well but I didn't like it. I enjoyed it but it wasn't super interesting to me.
I do love that he used his childhood as the basis for this film. I think it's important to know about a filmmaker's life because it makes the film more personal.
I think Chaplin is in the middle between Keaton and Lloyd in comedic style as well as in use if title cards. Lloyd uses a lot of title cards and facial expressions while Keaton keeps a deadpan face and uses very little.

  10. For Charlie Chaplin's first feature film I think he did an excellent job. I liked the movie, I like Chaplin's movies. He's my second favorite filmmaker we studied for the silent era. Harold Lloyd is still my favorite.

He's first child died, I think, he made this film because he wanted a child. Like the child represented his kid and when the boy his taken away that symbolizes Charlie's kid who died. That's what I thought it means. Maybe I'm over analyzing. It makes sense to me though.

I don't remember any similarities between Charlie, Harold and Keaton. I might just not remember.

I also don't think it sparked any ideas for my story.

  11. i really liked this movie, but it definitely has a lot of flaws. I thought that most of the movie was really good, the opening scene with the tramp was hilarious, it felt kinda long, and the dream sequence was definitely unnecessary. But this is the first silent film I've seen, so i love it.
