HAROLD LLOYD in Grandma's Boy (1922)

Well, this was your final experience with Mr. Lloyd for our class.  But, he's made so many more films, and I encourage you to keep watching them!  Especially if the opportunity comes up to see them with a live organist!  Here is a link for the Organ Loft, which regularly plays silent films of all shapes and sizes - it is one of my favorite places on this earth.

Continually playing the bullied character, many found him an everyman to root for.  Did you like that about Harold Lloyd?  Do you think he did a believable portrayal of a timid man?

Oh, the joy of sight gags and visual jokes (Harold and the bully accidentally holding hands when they thought it was Mildred's hand?  The sneaking into the shed moment?  Bringing the bad guy in a baby carriage?  Brilliant!).  What were some of your favorite jokes from this film?  Were there any that didn't work for you?  If so, why not?

*Genre Studies students, this is an especially important question for you, make sure you answer it: what is unique about Harold Lloyd's comedic style?  How will you apply this to your own scripts?

*Film History students:  what are your final thoughts on Harold Lloyd?  What is your opinion of him as an actor?  Of his films?  What is unique about his comedic style?  And, did you like that style?

  1. Well to end the week of Harold Lloyd, I think it was a good wrap up.
Yeah I thought it was great but I don't like happy endings, well, at least not as much as I like realistic endings... But It was believable, kind of, but oh well they were all really good films and kept me into them the entire journey.

Well I think when Harold was talking to the guy behind him while holding the crazy dude at "gun point", he just kind of walked around the hedge and the other guy didn't even notice! All of the jokes were perfect for this film and really helped me forget about them being silent or black and white (which I don't notice anyways). It all went together well.

Harold Lloyd was a great actor and good at portraying a total derp of a guy... His films were all fantastic, I will watch them over and over again if I get a chance. I think it was really unique because hardly any comedies had been made quite like that back then and this really introduced that type of character to film.

  3. i thought Harold Lloyd was awesome in this movie and all the other he has done in this movie interrupter i thought he had a charter that we can all relate to cuz we all need to come over challenges and some times it comes for magic objects to the power of our hearts cuz the challenges cloud be stopping a bully or talking to a girl/boy so i think this movie is a good story teller and tells us we can all win our challenges we face cuz ever day we face a new challenge ~ yami gaia (jesse miller)

  4. I think Harold Lloyd did a very believable portrayal of a timid man.
One of my favorite jokes in this movie was when Harold hit the Rolling Stone on the head. and when his grandfather would hit all those men on the head and said that he must have made the drink "too strong".

My final thoughts on Harold Lloyd:
I think he is a great actor. Especially in doing comedic roles. I also think his films are quite good and also quite funny. What is unique about Harold's comedic style is that he uses a lot o visual jokes. I liked that style.

  5. I like Harold Lloyd. I think he's a great actor. He played this role very well. But like I've been saying for some time, I find Harold Lloyd entertaining, but not funny. I don't know what it is. He's my least favorite of the three for this reason. His comedic style consists a lot of sight gags and facial expressions. My script will be very light on Lloyd like humor. It will consist more of Keaton and Chaplin like humor.

  7. My final thoughts on Harold Lloyd is that I think he was probably one of the best actors for his time. On his roles he's really funny, he can be serious and goofy, overall I think that he's a really good actor. I really enjoy watching his films because I just really like that he's a cute nerdy guy who's really nervous and likes the lady. I think that he must be one of the first actors to take the role of a character like that. What's unique about him is that he makes it pretty convincing that he's just this regular guy trying to fit in, or get the girl, he's just really nerdy and goofy. I think it's cool how he does some of his own stunts and such, like when he climbed the building. I don't how they did that, but it was cool. Yes I liked his style.

Yeah, I liked how he was a good character to root for in the movie. I think that he was really good to root for because he's just this really nice guy trying to get the girl. And of course there's his bully from most of his life still bullying him and trying to steal his girl. Whenever he's with her he's there, and he beats him up and is just a jerk. When the bum is on the lose the sheriff needs all bodied men to help with it and it gives him an opportunity. At first he fails, gets scared and runs to his bead. After that his grandmother tells him this fake story about how his grandfather during the civil war was about to get secret files from the Union with this lucky charm. She gives it to him and it gives him the courage and such to go out and catch the criminal. Then he gets the girl, beats up the bully for good and everything is good.

  8. I think Harold Lloyd did a very believable character in 'Grandma's boy' and I loved all the comedy things they put in this film but my favorite part was when he stepped on the rake and the bully and Harold were holding hands.

He could fall from a window as well as he could scale a wall. It was said that Lloyd was not a natural comedian, rather, that he was a great actor playing comedic roles. His ability to create multi-dimensional characters, both funny and moving, has helped to shape our view of what a comedic actor can be.

  9. I think he did the portrayed of the timid man was kind of believable I think realistically someone would act differently in some of the situations he was in. A lot of the times I could see the joke coming a mile away but the way the joke was expertly delivered made that completely reasonable. So in short I think Harold Lloyd is the take of the modern man stripped of rated R material. But it is just so funny I think looking at the way humor in comedy is taken today that a large portion is with adultery material and the reason why his humor is so golden is its just as funny and probably even more He does humor right that is way ahead of its time.

  10. Cameron Olsen . . . Grandma's Boy

I did like how Harold Lloyd played a nerdy everyman type character, it makes him easier to relate to. How he portrayed the timid man was very believable.

Some of my favorite jokes in Grandma's Boy: the part where sir Lloyd has the gun to the rolling stone's back and HL accidentally gets off the trail with neither of them noticing, the shed sneaking scene, and all the very unlikely lucky moments caused by Harold having the small statue. A 'funny' scene that didn't really work for me was the eating of the moth balls scene, because their mouths were open and you could see inside and it was just more gross than funny to me.

Final thoughts on Harold Lloyd: I think that he is a very funny actor, and his films are very entertaining. I feel very much that I will watch more of his films on my own, because I think they're hilarious. What is unique about his comedy style is how he uses the absence of sound to do very visual and complex gags, and how his films are always about the young likable nerd trying to get the girl and struggling incredibly, not about some big movie hero. I actually do like his comedy style. It is very optimistic, and while I usually lean towards more dark comedy, something about this optimism mixed with the likeable-ness of HL and the feeling that these films were made at the dawn of film really adds up to pure joy for me. I really do like Harold Lloyd, the man, the films, and the comedy, and I plan on watching more of him.

  11. I have not that much to say about this film but it's another good Harold Lloyd movie. The comedy is still pretty funny and the actors are great. This one to me isn't really as great as Safety Last or The Freshman. It's also feels fresh and new because the story. Today we heard of the grandma who has her grandson living in her basement but just like the freshman it feels it's brand new.

Overall I have not that much to say about this movie but it's still a pretty dang awesome movie
    B+

  12. I do believe harold lloyd played the timid character very well. Not only does he have the tall, lerpy and a bit awkward body type that we automatically link with being the bullied victim. But he also have that charm a sickly sweet, innocent and the sometimes naive charm that he adds to his character which go hand in hand with the role that he plays. I actually don't like most bullied type character because they are portrayed as weak and easily defeated but in harold lloyd's case i quite enjoy it because even though he is picked on and pushed around he never loses sight of his goals. He always tends to find hope even in the most hopeless situations. I love the false illusion jokes, such as the guys holding hands. Just the idea of people so fully believing in something, even if it just be for a split second, to only find out that it isn't quite what they believe. There is something about those jokes that just touches me just right and i find it hilarious. Most physical comedy i don't quite enjoy. I mean it will always make me chuckle but it doesn't have the same effect on me as well as a thought out joke even if it be just a small difference . But in the end I love harold lloyd and all his films his work as an actor and filmmaker to this day astound me.

  13. This movie has to be the funniest of the Harold Lloyd movies i have seen. I really thought the whole movie was funny, and it is really difficult to pinpoint what where some of the funniest scenes. But if i had to say what were the funniest jokes were, i would say it would be the scene where he is walking with a gun pointed at the tramp. that was genius.
I LOVE his comedic style. he adds just enough physical humor to make Buster Keaton fans happy, but he often has a lot of facial humor, which i think adds more depth to the character. i will definitely have lots of Harold Lloyd elements in my script.
